Drafting
Optional · 2 to 5 players · About 15 minutes to draft
Drafting is a fun way to build a new deck with your friends and family. Everyone opens booster packs, takes turns contributing cards to a shared pile, and ends up with a deck the whole group built together. It is collaborative, which makes it great for beginners and for playing with kids.

What You Need
- Booster packs, 3 per player for a 4 player draft (see the table below for other player counts)
- A table with room for everyone to lay their cards out face up
- Everything from the base game box to play with afterwards
How to Draft (4 Players)
This is the standard draft from the rulebook. Two steps:
- Each player opens 3 booster packs and puts their cards face up in front of them.
- On your turn, choose one Creature card and one non-Creature card (Action, Reaction or Upgrade) and place both in the center. Stop when everyone has added 8 pairs (16 cards), to the center deck.
That is it. Shuffle the 64 card shared deck you created together and play.
Because every player adds one Creature and one non-Creature each time, the finished deck comes out half Creatures automatically. You never have to count or rebalance it.
Other Player Counts
The pair-per-turn structure stays the same at every player count. Only the number of packs and the number of pairs changes, so the deck lands near 60 cards:
| Players | Packs each | Pairs each | Shared deck |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 6 | 16 | 64 cards |
| 3 | 4 | 10 | 60 cards |
| 4 | 3 | 8 | 64 cards |
| 5 | 3 | 6 | 60 cards |
At 2, 3 and 4 players a draft uses 12 booster packs total. A 5 player draft uses 15.
Short on packs? You can use less packs if you'd like, as long as you contribute the same number of card pairs. Using less packs just gives less variety on what cards you can select from.
What Happens to the Leftover Cards
Leftover cards go back into your collection and can be used for deck building or the next draft if you'd like.
Drafting Tips
Talk about it
This is a collaborative draft, so table talk is encouraged. Calling out "we need more Upgrades" is fair play.
Keep the pairs honest
One Creature and one non-Creature every turn is what guarantees the finished deck is balanced. If someone runs out of one type, have them trade with another player rather than adding two of the same.
Here's a rough mix of cards that works well, but feel free to try different things out!
| Card type | Count |
|---|---|
| Creature cards | 30 |
| Action cards | 16 |
| Upgrade cards | 10 |
| Reaction cards | 8 |
| Total | 64 |
Then Play
Shuffle the shared deck you built and play by the Standard Game Rules. Setup and play are unchanged, you are just using your drafted deck instead of the one from the box.
