How Cube Creatures Started

Hi, we're Porter and DJ! In early 2025, when Porter was 7, we decided to make a game together as a fun weekend project.

We had been playing card games and board games together for years, and Porter had also been drawing and inventing creatures for as long as I can remember. He was always filling pages with new characters, names and ideas.

We printed some homemade cards, made up a few rules and started playing at home. Porter would draw creatures and come up with ideas, I would turn them into cards, and together we’d figure out how they worked in the game. Then we’d play, change things and try again (and again).

One of those early characters was Cube Man, a cube-shaped creature Porter had created at comic book camp. He became one of the first characters in the game and eventually helped inspire the name Cube Creatures.

From Drawings to Cards

Porter’s creativity is at the heart of Cube Creatures. Many creatures begin with his drawings and ideas, which our professional artists then turn into the finished illustrations you see on the cards. Every piece of artwork in Cube Creatures is original and 100% hand drawn.

One of the things we care most about is getting kids drawing, inventing and making things of their own. We held our first kids art contest in 2025, with creatures designed by young artists becoming real cards in the game, and we plan to keep finding ways to encourage that creativity.

Started at Our Kitchen Table

Our home project has slowly become something bigger. Friends and family started playing, more artists joined us, we shared the game online, and soon after many people backed Cube Creatures on Kickstarter.

The heart of it is still the same. We’re a dad and son making a game together in Oakland, California, coming up with characters we love and game mechanics we think are fun.

Where Cube Creatures Is Today

Our goal is for Cube Creatures to get kids drawing, inventing and creating, and give families another reason to sit down and play together.

After a lot of drawing, cutting, testing and replaying (with many thanks to hundreds of playtesters), Cube Creatures has become the game we wanted to play together:

  • Wild, lovable creatures - featuring original hand-drawn art.
  • Easy to learn - most kids and adults can learn in about 5 minutes.
  • Quick to play - battles take around 15 minutes, even on busy weeknights.
  • Simple but strategic - approachable for kids, with enough depth to keep parents engaged through repeat plays.
  • Collectible, but collecting isn’t required - one Starter Set has everything a family needs to play, while booster packs add more creatures and the fun of collecting.
  • Built for younger players too (5+) - Grandma’s Rules is a simplified version originally created so Porter’s little brother could join in.
  • One shared deck - so no one starts with a stronger individual deck. It makes customization easy for kids and enables some of our favorite game mechanics.
  • Travel friendly - featuring a small portable game box you can throw in any bag.
  • Attack Die - because dice are fun :)

We hope you have as much fun playing as we’ve had creating it!
