Deck Building
Optional · Build your own shared deck · Ages 6+
Want to customize your game? Deck building in Cube Creatures is deliberately simple and collaborative. There is no chasing specific cards and no building an overpowered deck nobody can beat. Open some booster packs, mix and match whatever wild combinations you like, and follow two rules.

The Two Deck Rules
- 60 card minimum deck size.
- Half Creature cards, half non-Creature cards (Actions, Reactions and Upgrades).
In a 60 card deck that means 30 Creature cards and 30 non-Creature cards. Build a bigger deck if you like, as long as the halves stay even.
That's all you need to know and can start building now if you'd like. More optional details below.
One Shared Deck, Not One Deck Each
This is the part that surprises players coming from other card games. In Cube Creatures everyone draws from a single shared deck in the middle of the table. You are not building a personal deck to bring to a fight. You are building the deck the whole table will play from.
That is why deck building here is collaborative rather than competitive, and why nobody can build something unfair. Whatever you put in, your opponents can draw too.
Why Half Creatures?
Creature cards are the only cards that do anything on their own, and you need a steady supply of them:
- Your Battlefield holds up to 3 Creatures, and you start the game by putting 2 into play.
- Every defeated Creature has to be replaced, and a player with an empty Battlefield must play a Creature on their turn.
- Upgrade cards do nothing without a Creature to attach to.
A deck light on Creatures stalls out. Players draw hands full of Upgrades with nothing to put them on, and games slow to a crawl. Keeping the deck half Creatures is what prevents that.
Building the Non-Creature Half
The other 30 cards are Actions, Reactions and Upgrades in whatever mix you like. A few things worth knowing before you decide:
Upgrades
Each Creature can carry a maximum of 1 Weapon and 1 Armor, and an Upgrade can never be moved once attached. A deck stuffed with Upgrades will leave players holding cards they cannot legally play.
Actions
Action cards are the most reliably useful of the three, since you can play one on your own turn whenever you like. They are a safe place to put the bulk of your non-Creature cards.
Reactions
Reaction cards are the most disruptive and the most advanced, since they can be played on anyone's turn and can counter each other back and forth. If you are building a deck for younger or newer players, go light on Reactions or leave them out entirely. See the Rules FAQ for how Reaction cards work.
Where the Cards Come From
You can build from any Cube Creatures cards you own:
- The 60 card deck in the base game box
- Booster packs, each with 11 game cards including one foil, and one guaranteed rare or ultra-rare card
- Any promo cards you have picked up
There is no banned list and no card is off limits. Every card in Cube Creatures is legal in a custom deck.
A Simple First Deck
If you are building your first deck and want somewhere to start, this mix plays well:
| Card type | Count |
|---|---|
| Creature cards | 30 |
| Action cards | 14 |
| Upgrade cards | 10 |
| Reaction cards | 6 |
| Total | 60 |
Play a few games, then adjust. If your group enjoys unexpected twists and back & forth play, add more Reaction cards.
Prefer to Build Together?
Drafting is a structured way for a group to build a shared deck from booster packs in about 15 minutes. Everyone contributes, and you end up with a deck nobody could have built alone.
Play
Shuffle your finished deck and play by the Standard Game Rules. Everything works exactly as it normally does, you are just playing with a deck you built.
